How to make Coconut Oil

Coconut oil made at home is one beauty product you will love to have all the time .I like to use body oil  as part of my daily beauty routine. I suddenly ran out of my regular brand and with no time to get to the shops, I decided to do it my self. Thanks to Mma (as I call my mum) for all the things I learnt growing up. You suddenly find that you were equipped to find solutions for some things in life, making your body oil like Coconut oil.

The exciting part of the making of “Aran Isip” (efik language for Coconut oil) is the eating of the sweet slurry that remains after the coconut oil has been drained out of the pot. As children, we will hang around the kitchen as soon as we start smelling the aroma of oil in the kitchen. As soon as the pot is cool enough to handle,we will scrambled for the slurry, scrapping to the last spoon.
This is exactly what I did a few days ago,I enjoyed it and saw my house help hoping in vain that something will be left in the pot:)

Coconut oil can be used in rice dishes, biscuits or cookies. It contains saturated fats so be moderate when using it in cooking. It can also be used to moisturize your hair. Meanwhile I am heading off to the bathroom to lavish my oil on this thirsty skin.

How to make the Coconut oil?

Grate 1-2 whole coconuts.

Using warm water extract the milk like you want to cook coconut rice.

boil coconut milk

Do not use  much water as the milk has to be boiled to dry. Ensure to squeeze out as much milk as possible.

Boil the milk till dry and your oil starts to appear.

Boil until the slurry turns very light brown but not burnt.

At this point the oil is all extracted.

Drain oil straight from the fire into a metal bowl immediately.

  • please can i use this oil to fry food for my kit and how do i apply it on my body ie do i pour it in my cream or just apply direct. i think i love this.

    • Hi,Joy. I have not tried frying with Coconut oil. Because it is saturated oil ,I believe it will smoke a bit , so I will not advise. You can how ever use in cooking rice without frying it and this is lovely . To use as cosmetic, I just rub on my skin just like any lotion. You may want to mix with your lotion but I have tried it that way.

  • I got to know about coconut oil as hair oil about 3 years back and I am always proud of myself when ever I have to open my hair at the saloon or when am with my hubby or friends. However, I have always thought the procedure was a long and hectic thing and so a woman makes it for me….. a very small lacasera bottle for 2500 naira! Now I know better and she has to be sacked immediately! Thanks a lot ma, your blog is inspirations and I am a better wife and cook since I got this blog from my sister a month ago.

    • Hello, Rosy. As a bath oil, yes I believe Coconut oil will be interesting. For the hair I will recommend use after washing hair. I know people will rather use mayonnaise to condition the hair before washing. Thank you for stopping by my blog. Please follow us so you get to be notified of new posts.

  • Hi, Constance. You can add the coconut oil to your lotion for more oiliness or use it on its own on the skin. To use for the hair you simply use to oil the hair when styling.
