How to make Kelewele

Fried ripe plantain in any form including Kelewele is always a treat. I currently have a couple of ripe plantain hanging on my plantain rack in the kitchen. The thought of Mosa has crossed my mind in case they get overripe. So just before we get to that point , I thought to make some Kelewele. These days with the high cost of plantains in Nigeria it is not a food item you want to go to waste . Because I had visitors stopping by during the public holiday I made some easy simple foods from the plantain to serve.

Talking of visitors in The Nigerian setting…..People just stop by your house un announced and you have to offer something to eat or drink. This simple plantain dish fits the kind of food to offer in a jiffy.

Originally Kelewele is a Ghanaian  street food but from Cote d’Ivore to Nigerian we eat these spicy fried plantain chips with groundnut or pepper sauce. Just so we don’t start another Jollof rice  controversy here we agree that let I leave the subject as is. You will find these spicy  fried plantains served as starters in some restaurants or as simple meals in homes. My use of yellow pepper brings a nice flavour to the plantain. Enjoy!
